Mecom journalists form international network
Journalists in David Montgomery's new media empire are setting up an international alliance to stand stronger in face of the radical restructuring they fear will come. During a full-day meeting in Oslo yesterday, representatives from Norway, Denmark, Holland, Germany and Poland hammered out the framework for a formal network that will enable the different national groups to exchange experiences, develop shared policies and address shared problems. So far, 713 jobs are scheduled to be axed in 2007 and 2008, but Mecom employees fear the high demands to profitability in Mecom's business plan will require much more extensive cost cutting.
A few quick calls confirmed that the Orkla-Mecom story is really yet another manifestation of the tensions inherent in a globalised world, and there is still great uncertainty and uneasiness in Mecom's newly acquired newspapers about what exactly the consequences of being owned by a highly geared British stock company will be...
